Thirteen more days until the blissful frenzy [and sometimes chaos] of NaNoWriMo. This year I will begin my adventure with NaNoWriMo from Maui, where the hubs and I will be celebrating five years of marriage from Oct 25 through Nov 3.
The hubs is also participating in NaNo this year, writing a Sports Drama titled ‘Fourth & Goal‘ which takes place in Long Beach, Mississippi, one of many places Mike called home. I will be writing another fantasy titled ‘A Warrior Grimm‘, though this is apt to change if I don’t get a better idea of the general story.
I have noted this as a tendency for NaNoWriMos both past and present, entertaining the possibility of 3 different stories prior to Day 1. In fact, this last year I came up with the entire regency romance story the night of a Halloween Party the last weekend of October. How’s that for cutting it close? For 2008 and 2009 I had Mike’s campaign module notes. Not so for 2010, and perhaps not so for 2011!
Storyfix.com has run a truly inspired series on how to prepare for NaNoWriMo during the month of October. Have I been able to follow any of this sage advice? Sadly, no. Although I have gleaned some great information as a whole. Gone are the naive ideas that I am moulding myself into more of an outline writer. While I do enjoy having a general outline/summary of the novel idea in front of me, anything more detailed than that and I begin feeling constricted and imprisoned. Writing under duress is not the way to experience joy in writing!
But I will not allow myself to become disheartened! While in Maui I will use the time for good, jotting down the information that I DO know about the characters and the story that is, I’m sure, percolating in my head without my full knowledge. Characters have a tendency of doing that, don’t they? AND, since the hubs is also participating, we plan on having a first day write-in while we are there, starting at 12:01 and writing as much as we possibly can before hitting the hay. In fact, if we play our cards write… er, RIGHT, we could pull an all-nighter! It all depends on what activity we have planned for the 2nd.
All in all, while I am a little… anxious, I feel certain that this will be yet another rewarding NaNoWriMo adventure!
What do you say about yours? How are you preparing?
